What are password managers?
30th October 2025
The downside to more secure passwords is that it can be hard to keep track of them all: that is where password managers become useful!
Over at Interfuture Security, we’ve done a lot in the past to explain what makes a good password and why making it strong is vital for cyber security. In short, your passwords should be complex, varied and random (i.e. not whole words or phrases).
In doing this though, you create a new problem: how do you remember all these passwords? Noting them down creates more security risks, as whether digitally or physically, if other people access it then all your accounts are compromised.
Sure, if you forget you could reset your password, but doing this each time is time consuming, and a security risk as you become lazier every time you create a new one. If they’re strong enough then learning them all by wrote will be impossible for most: so, what is the solution?
Password managers are secure applications that keeps hold of your credentials for websites, apps and services. By storing usernames and passwords in an encrypted vault, password managers will automatically fill in login forms for you on your device, removing the need to remember the details.
Additionally, password manager can create strong, unique and randomly generated passwords for you, preventing users from accidentally using something obvious or personal. They can also sync across devices, providing the same access from your mobile and your desktop.
You can access your passwords by logging in to your password manager (the one password/pin/passkey you’ll need to remember!) and can copy, adjust or delete them from there.
By using a password manager, the need to remember your passwords is gone: as long as you don’t lose your physical device, all your data remains secure. In our next article, we’ll go over other password manager features, why you should use one and we’ll suggest a few to take a look at.
