How does office IT effect your physical health?
10th October 2025
What impact does using everyday IT have on our bodies?
The modern office uses technology to make operations as simple and effective as possible. Virtual calls mean that travel for meetings is reduced; online documentation is far more malleable than paper and pen; multi-screen setups allow for more efficiency.
However, these technologies could be having an impact on your body’s health. What problems can arise and what can be done to mitigate the damage, ensuring you get all the benefits of using new devices without the drawbacks?
Eye strain and vision problems
· Cause: excessive screen time, poor lighting, minimal breaks.
· Symptoms: dry eyes, blurred vision, headaches, difficulty focusing.
· Solutions: adjust screen brightness and contrast to match ambient lighting, position screens slightly below eye level and at arm’s length, take regular breaks or use blue light filters/glasses.
Back/neck/shoulder pain
· Cause: poor posture, uncomfortable furniture, laptops without stands, long sitting hours.
· Symptoms: stiffness, chronic pain, reduced mobility.
· Solutions: invest in ergonomic chairs with lumbar support and adjustable height, use stands to raise screens to eye level, use standing desks, take standing breaks, stretch/move throughout the day.
Repetitive strain injuries
· Cause: excessive typing, mouse use, touchscreen interaction, poor wrist positioning.
· Symptoms: tingling, numbness, pain in fingers, wrists or forearms.
· Solutions: use ergonomic keyboards and mice with wrists rests, try voice-to-text tools or shortcuts to reduce repetition, rest your arms and hands often, rotate tasks to mix up movement.
Sedentary lifestyle effects
· Cause: long hours sat at a desk with minimal physical activity.
· Symptoms: weight gain, fatigue, cardiovascular issues, reduced energy.
· Solutions: try things like walking meetings/standing calls, embrace office fitness programs (if they are available), take breaks, move regularly, avoid takeaway lunches and try to balance things by exercising outside of work.
There are different levels to each of these physical effects: most of us will experience these in a minor way, but if it becomes a bigger problem, we encourage staff to speak to their bosses about making the changes we have suggested.
Remember, the healthier you are, the happier you are and the better you will work!
If you’re having a physical problem caused by your work IT, and we haven’t mentioned it here, please let Interfuture Systems know, we’d love to help if we can!
