What are the most common IT mistakes that small businesses make (part 2)?
8th October 2025
When you’re fighting each day to keep your company afloat, IT can become an afterthought: don’t let it.
We’re back with more tips for improving the IT of SMBs – check out the first blog here to get all the useful advice. These are mistakes that small businesses frequently make, along with the easy solutions that we recommend implementing today!
1. Not tracking IT costs properly
Usually SMBs underspend, but sometimes it is the other way around. If IT is scattered over multiple departments, budgets can overrun. Ensure there is oversight, that licenses and subscriptions are reviewed often and that you’re only paying for what you use.
2. Using outdated hardware
Every time we have a customer go for the cheapest PC on the market we tell them the same thing: it won’t be cheaper in the long run. Poor hardware results in slower performance, low productivity, and you’ll have to replace it the minute it can’t support the apps you use. Invest in decent hardware that will last – it will be worth it!
3. Ignoring integration between systems
Your business will run better if the technology you use communicates. Ideally, as much as possible should be integrated and within the same ecosystem: for example, invest in a CRM and an email marketing system from the same company, not different ones. This will improve efficiency and help to avoid mistakes.
4. No clear IT strategy
When you’re running with the limitations that SMBs often are, it can be hard to sit down and figure out a plan, but without one you can waste money or miss opportunities. If there are changes to your IT you need, make sure to plan, don’t make decisions as you go, otherwise things get missed.
5. Underutilising existing tools
Why pay for things you aren’t using? Tell your staff what they have available to them and train them to use it effectively: you’ll make the most out of your investment and will improve your productivity.
Hopefully those tips can help you to correct mistakes in your small businesses IT infrastructure and you can adjust. Remember, it doesn’t matter how small your budget or how limited your time: IT is not something you can afford to ignore!
