How did the Covid pandemic change the way we use IT? (part 2)

27th June 2025

The pandemic changed how most people worked: how did IT services evolve to keep up with that change?

Welcome to part two of our article exploring how IT changed thanks to the restrictions of the Covid pandemic – if you missed part one, take a look HERE.

Technology always innovates because of need: the more pressure we are under, the quicker we work to resolve problems and improve. The years of the pandemic reflected that – without change, businesses that are thriving today would have struggled, or even collapsed entirely: here are some of the methods they used to survive.

Education: while commercial businesses needed to move online to keep reaching customers, schools needed to so they could keep teaching. Using online platforms, classes were taught remotely, with educational technology services seeing a significant uptake in use.

While school may be back in session, there are more options for hybrid learning for those who need it. Education can be accessed across the globe, even by those who may have been unable to go to school before. Furthermore, both teachers and students have become more IT literate, which is useful as technology continues to advance.

Health: obviously health services were in high demand during the Covid years – it was a medical emergency after all. However, with the need for isolation in hospitals being vital, and wards being oversubscribed, a lot of improvements had to be made to online systems, ensuring anything that could be done remotely was, and that patient needs were met as efficiently as possible.

Today, healthcare services are more efficient thanks to improved online systems for bookings and accessibility is better for patients who struggle to get to in-person facilities. Also, the use of health data has evolved, allowing organisations to spot patterns and trends to better help people.

Entertainment: during the pandemic, all social events were shut down, leading to problems for venues and performers alike. For many, online events kept them afloat, with remote comedy sets or music performances helping to keep the creative industries going while providing people stuck at home with some entertainment.

Now, a lot of events have remote options, for those who want to participate but can’t get to the venue. In addition, other media options like streaming and gaming increased in popularity over the lockdown, with many channels still as popular today.

The pandemic was a difficult time for everyone, but it pushed IT innovation forward and gave us an entirely new way of working. Every industry reacted differently, but with the same goal: make things remote, online and accessible – and ultimately that is good advice for any business.
