IT Essentials: Government

13th June 2025

How can government organisations ensure that they abide by their own regulations when it comes to their IT?

When it comes to the UK government, IT needs vary immensely depending on what department is being considered. Some high-level departments, such as the Ministry of Defence, have access to the latest technology while local government officials struggle to keep up with limited budgets and resources.

There are a few elements that are necessary across government – if you work for a government organisation, see if you have access to the following:

Infrastructure: government-approved cloud servers and used to house data for scalability and resilience, and where cloud is not available secure data centres house sensitive data. Networks with critical services need to always be accessible and there should be a device management control system in place for improved security.

Communication: internally, government-grade security should be applied to all communications, including emails, internal portals and video conferencing tools. Externally, government organisations usually use posted letters to convey vital information as these are less likely to be replicated or faked by scammers, though the move to secure apps is steadily increasing.

Cyber Security: obviously the government holds a lot of important information, from the personal details of citizens to documents that could put national security at risk if breached. A zero-trust architecture ensures that all systems are kept separate and secure, along with multi-factor authentication, encryption and SOC monitoring. While government IT goes far beyond this, these are the basics: the technology, how it communicates and how it is kept secure. If a government organisation is lacking in one of these key areas, it may put them at risk of downtime, or even a security breach.
