If your IT service provider is letting you down, what can you do?

13th May 2025

IT support and services are so important: if they’re not up to your standards, it is time to take action!

There is a high chance if you’re a business owner or work for a modern business that you use IT in some regard. Your IT might be managed by an external managed service provider or by an internal IT support team, but either way, you rely on them to keep your devices running.

While the occasional issue is standard (even the best IT support can be overwhelmed by new malware or disruptive updates), if it happens frequently and without good reason it may be that your IT solution is letting you down. We’ve got some recommendations as to what you can do:

Talk to them – your IT support may not even be aware that there is an issue, so it is worth talking to them first. If you go to them with a record of problems, including times and dates, they may be able to make positive changes.

Make a complaint – if talking to them doesn’t get them to improve how they are working, a complaint sent to people higher up in the organisation may help. Again, it is worth including proof of your issues. In some extreme cases it may be worth seeking legal counsel, but we recommend thoroughly studying your contract first to determine where you stand.

Alternative options – you may be stuck in contract, but it is still worth looking at other IT support providers. You can request quotes to compare services and prices, allowing you to see if you’re getting good value for money.

Then, as soon as you can get out of contract, you can have your new provider lined up, ready to take over. Some IT service companies even offer to buy you out of your current contract, paying off the first company so you can transfer immediately.

Evidently, you have a lot of options if your IT provider isn’t meeting expectations: you can try to fix the issues or can move on to better options. The worst thing you can do is nothing – if you’re having problems, take positive steps today!
