When should I upgrade to a new device?
9th May 2025
With Windows 10 going end of life in October, you need a device that can support the latest software – are you prepared?
Upgrading your PC or laptop can feel like a hassle: it can be costly to get a new device, time-consuming to get all of your files and programs transferred over, occasionally there can be a learning curve if the new device works differently to the old one due to updates – overall, it can be one of those things that you keep putting off.
However, as your current device gets older and more and more out of date, you may notice various issues arising that impact your PC’s performance. Here are some of the signs that your device may be slowing down, how they can be detrimental to your work and why it might be time to move to a newer device:
Performance issues – if your PC or laptop is slow to start, has long loading times, lags and stutters or freezes and crashes, this may be a sign that your device needs replacing. These issues stem from hardware or software issues that a more modern device wouldn’t have. Obviously if these problems occur frequently your work will suffer – for better productivity, we recommend an upgrade.
Compatibility – if your device is unable to run the latest operating system, software updates, or work with more modern hardware, this could mean that you should consider upgrading it. Also, the inability to run the latest updates will mean that your security can’t be up to date, making you vulnerable to cyber-attack.
Hardware limitations – if your device is short on memory or storage space, an upgrade will be needed, otherwise it will just become unusable. An outdated graphics card could also have a negative impact on your work if you regularly use visual media as part of your role.
Physical signs – if your device overheats or the battery doesn’t last, it may be that the physical parts of the PC or laptop are just out of date. A device that you can’t use is no good to you!
We can’t tell you exactly when you need a new device – that is your decision – but if you are experiencing one or more of these problems then we recommend you consider it. It may seem like an expense now, but the time it will save you in the long run makes it a worthwhile investment.
