Windows vs Apple: which is right for your business?

30th April 2025

When deciding on key elements of your IT infrastructure, it is worth making comparisons before you make a purchase. One of these elements may be deciding between Windows PCs and Apple Macs as the core of your IT for your staff.

While you could give a blended setup a try, we would advise against it unless it is a special case: the two systems don’t always gel together well, and it could lead to problems in the future.

Take a look at some of the key differences between the two setups and decide which would work best for you:

Windows PC

Advantages:

·         Software compatibility – Windows are known for their wide range of software programs, including the Microsoft Office Suite which contains programs that many of us use everyday (like Outlook and Teams).

·         Customisability – you can change and upgrade parts like storage and graphics cards easily.

·         Enterprise integration – Windows PCs blends well with enterprise systems and networks, which makes them ideal for larger businesses.

·         Cost efficiency – Windows PCs can vary in price depending on the make and model you go for, allowing for more budget friendly options.

·         Remote work – if you’re working from home frequently, Windows PCs offer solutions like VPNs and remote desktop applications.

Disadvantages:

·         Security – Windows PCs are more vulnerable to malware and viruses, particularly if proper security measures are not taken.

·         Consistency – the user experience can be very different depending on the make and model of PC you are using.

Apple Mac

Advantages:

·         Quality – Macs look professional and are built to a high quality.

·         Operating system – macOS is praised for stability and ease of use, increasing productivity and reducing downtime.

·         Security – in general, Macs are considered more secure against malware.

·         Software optimisation – Macs are optimised for creative tasks like video editing, graphic design and music production.

·         Integration – you can use an Apple Mac seamlessly with other Apple products your business may have including iPads or iPhones.

Disadvantages:

·         Price – Macs are usually more expensive.

·         Compatibility – some business software may require a virtual version of a Windows setup to get working.

·         Customisation – upgrade options for Macs are less than for Windows.

Overall, it really depends on what you need as to which one you should use. For most, Windows is the best option as they allow a cost-effective option, simple to scale and integrate, with programs that are useful for most workers.

However, in a few special cases, Apple Macs might be preferrable: if you were a creative working in a smaller business, it might be worth the investment.
